Word,
It says "Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Meekness, and as the old saying goes, "Meekness does not mean weakness." It means openness or receptivity. It's one of the words that Paul used for those in ministry.
It's also translated gentleness. But it means to be open. The person who's giving the word and ministering the things of Christ, that person must be more open and receptive than any other person. They can't close themselves off like they have arrived and everybody else hasn't. They have to be open.
And then temperance means self-control, or more literally the control of self. This is not self-control like trying to enforce discipline in our eating. "I've got to exhibit more self-control when I eat."
This word means to be controlled from within, to be controlled by the Spirit of God.
And then he says against such there is no law. And again, he's saying that this is the fruit of God's Spirit. There is no law against these.
Hope this helps!

Galatians 5:23, what is Paul saying to the Galatians
Cristina's comment on 2021-04-11 06:25:37:
To Doris, if this is the first marriage for both, you are one flesh with your husband for life. No more twain, but one flesh, said Lord Jesus; never again two. a spiritual union that lasts until the death of one. This is why marrying is very very important to the Lord as it represents His marriage union with the Church whom He does not divorce. Have ever heard of the ''betrothal'' (a sort of engagement pior to the marriage itself, a spiritual bounding contract, see Deuteronomoy 22 about a virgin bride) and what it means to marriage?
How many times in life we are not doing what Jesus said...? He is patient with us to repent even until we die.
The exception in Matthew 5:32 and 19:8 is for fornication, meaning Not adultery (modern lexicons have added to the meaning in the past 200 years to include all sorts of sins other than fornication), but unchastity before the marriage itself. And in 1 Corinthians 7:15, ''not bound'' is coming from the word ''douloo'' in Greek which means ''servant/slave'', and it means not bound in the matrimonial duties, but still bound in the one flesh for life. Apostle Paul says that a woman who has a husband is bound to her husband for life until he dies and if she marries another she is an adulterress (Romans 7:2-3, 1 Corinhians 7:29, 39).
In case of abuse , extreme, separation can be a solution, but divorce and remarriage is against thr Word of God and adulterers do not inherit God's Kingdom (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Galatians 5:19-21).
Don't let modern interpretations mislead you about marriage, if it's a first for both, it is for life.

Hello Bet,
Self control is not left out and is very important as you know. It is the word "temperance" at the end of the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:23.
God Bless.
Bett's comment on 2021-03-14 21:41:58:
Why is "self-control" being left out? It is very important and included in all older revisions of the Bible. Do we no longer need self-control?

The Greek, pharmakeia, can also denote the casting of 'spells or incantations', along with as you mentioned, use of drugs as part of witchcraft & sorceries. Brother Mishael might be able to enlighten us if there is any history of such use of drugs/potions, whether in olden or modern days that he has learned. I wonder what they used, or concocted, to bring on their desired outcomes.
Bill McCarthy's comment on 2020-11-20 15:38:58:
In classical Greek pharmakeia referred to the use of drugs whether for medicinal or more sinister purposes, e.g., poisoning. In the New Testament, however, it is invariably associated with the occult, both in Galatians [5:20] and in Revelation, where it occurs twice (Rev 9:21; 18:23). English translations usually render pharmakeia as "witchcraft" (KJV, NIV) or "sorcery" (RSV, NEB). These words correctly convey the idea of black magic and demonic control, but they miss the more basic meaning of drug use. In New Testament times pharmakeia in fact denoted the use of drugs with occult properties for a variety of purposes including, especially, abortion.

Doris, God never signs off on any abuse. God is about the abundant life and a husband is supposed to love you like he loves himself. He clearly doesn't love himself. Any abuse is unacceptable! If you are being mistreated, you have the right to divorce your husband, ASAP!...The longer you stay, the longer the relationship will drain you of your self-esteem.

First off is he a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ?
Secondly Read Galatians with a spirit of prayer and ask the Lord for decernment. It's not gonna be as easy as looking at a verse and pulling it out of context. Really seek the Lord through prayer and rely on Him for guidance. Cast your cares on Him for He cares for us. It's that deep relationship with Him that matters most.
Doris's comment on 2020-08-08 12:13:09:
I am looking for 'abuse' in a marriage. Not physical abuse but mental/emotional abuse and if that is an activity that would justify divorce in a Christian marriage.
