It 's not about when God 's Son shall return to us but when we shall return to him. Paul said we should comfort our selfs with the notion of Jesus returning to earth in the clouds. But it is incumbent upon us that we be about the work of serving him and not expecting to be exalted in that work. It is our duty and nothing more.

To those who are not watching, living obediently, he will come as a thief. If we are found faithful at his coming, we will not be cut asunder and appointed a portion with the hypocrites: THERE shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. THAT is "where" one shall be taken-to be destroyed (the tares to be burned). The other left-to be preserved (the wheat gathered into the Lord's barn).

There seems to be a great deal of confusion of verse 37. If we take the entire discourse (20-37) into concideration it should be obvious Jesus is talking about His return, which is the second coming. 1 Thess. 4:13-18 reveals the same message, the question of vs. 37 of Lk. 17 was addressed to Jesus,"Where Lord" refering to a location. Jesus said one will be taken and the other left, therefore the question would be directed to "where will the one be taken".
