It is likely the man was seeking to gain his inheritance from his dying father. His time would be better spent in the eyes of god spreading the word and saving living souls.

Only believe and it shall be made well! Fear not, what is dead in your life shall be alive in Jesus Christ, just believe.

Literally meaning, instead of tennding to one dying, tend to my sheep.one saved soul is much worthy than one dead
