@Valerie Although your comment was 7 years ago, I still feel the need to point out that I don't see any message in this phrase saying that you CAN'T forgive your spouse. It's simply just stating the only reason you COULD divorce, is because of cheating. Which is 100% understandable.

This by far is the most complex phrase in all of scripture. It seems to totally contradict forgiveness, it does not allow for extenuating circumstances, and is paradoxical to GOD's example of forgiving and reconciling of Israel after her harlotry in the wake of HIS pain.

Jesus is talking to the espoused or rather the engaged when he speaks of "fonication". Just like how Mary was considered Joseph's wife even though they were not yet married. So the engaged man can put away his wife if it is found that she is not pure ( not a virgin). Thus, it is safe to say that she has committed fornication. Fornication is a forbidden sexual act between the unmarried. To the married he simply says remain married because you have passed the stage (espoused/engaged stage) to put away your spouse.
